I have never passed a day without thinking of him many times over as the man who was sure to be against me.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Butler graduated from Cambridge in 1858.<\/li>\n<li>After his graduation, Samuel&#8217;s father wanted him\u00a0to become a priest. \u00a0However a crisis of faith lead Samuel\u00a0down a different path. \u00a0He emigrated to New Zealand and raised sheep instead. \u00a0He returned to England in 1864.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #252525;\">Butler made prose translations of the\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"color: #252525;\">Iliad<\/i><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"color: #252525;\">Odyssey<\/i><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0which remain in use to this day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>He died on June 18, 1902 in London.<\/li>\n<li><em>The Way of All Flesh<\/em> is a semi-autobiographical novel and was published posthumously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Samuel Butler was born in December of 1835 in the village of Langar in England.
