The pseudonyms hid\u00a0the sisters&#8217; gender while preserving their initials.<\/p>\n<p>In 1854 Charlotte married Arthur Bell Nicholls. \u00a0Their courtship was turbulent. \u00a0Charlotte\u00a0initially refused Arthur&#8217;s\u00a0marriage\u00a0proposal. \u00a0Even after Charlotte accepted his proposal her father was not convinced it was a good match. \u00a0He was concerned about Nicholls&#8217;s poor financial status.\u00a0 Eventually all the obstacles were cleared. \u00a0They married on June 29, 1854.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Charlotte\u00a0died soon after the marriage. \u00a0She passed on March 31, 1855. \u00a0Her death certificate lists the cause of death as tuberculosis.
